Today, I stand proudly as a Regional Organiser for one of the largest Trade Unions in the country; a role that brings me deep fulfilment and purpose. However, the journey here was far from easy. I never imagined that stepping out of my comfort zone would lead me to such a fulfilling role.
For many years, I worked diligently behind the scenes, first as an Administrator, then as an Area Organiser.
I often asked myself why I stayed as an Area Organiser for so long. I could have easily convinced myself that I stayed because I enjoyed engaging with employers, supporting members, and building relationships with stakeholders.
However, in quieter moments, I knew the truth. It was because I lacked the confidence to step beyond what felt safe and familiar. I feared rejection. I lacked confidence. My social capital was limited. The thought of learning new skills for a new role felt overwhelming. I was good at what I did and met my targets. Why risk stepping away from that comfort?
The Wake-Up Call
My transition journey began when I started the Stellar Leadership Programme which was aimed at staff from Ethnic minority backgrounds. My line manager encouraged me to do the programme but I was sceptical. I had attended similar training programmes before, but none of them was transformational. Therefore, I had no grand expectations of the Stellar Leadership Programme.
However, I was proved wrong, the Stellar Leadership Programme was impactful. These two aspects made it stand out for me.
Psychological Safety: The programme facilitators created an environment where I felt truly heard. Their support helped me explore my doubts and fears, while reassuring me that I was in a safe space to grow.
Challenging Content: The discussions and group work, around topics such as Communication, Self awareness and authenticity resonated with my lived experience as a Black migrant woman. Some content was emotionally tough, but the group reflections pushed me beyond my comfort zone in ways I hadn’t anticipated.
What I gained from the Stellar Leadeship Programme
The Art of effective Communication
I learned how to listen attentively and give constructive feedback and articulate a clear vision. This shift improved not just how I spoke but how my views impacted others and led to positive change.
The tools to leverage interview feedback
Before the Stellar programme, I viewed feedback as a one-way dialogue. I’d listen, nod, and move on. The programme taught me how to request feedback, prepare for the session, and use open questions to initiate two way dialogue.
The power of my lived experience
I began to view my lived experience as a Black Migrant woman in a different way. It was no longer a liability but a strength. I learnt how to use different technique such as story telling and clear language to showcase my livid experience and uniqueness.
One of my biggest breakthroughs was letting go of the fear of being labelled an “angry Black woman.” I now fully embrace myself as a woman whose unique experiences not only define me but deserve to be celebrated with pride and authenticity.
The craft of effective career planning
The reflective exercises helped me realise that my career had plateaued. With support from the programme facilitators, I conducted a skills audit, rediscovered my strengths, and set bold career goals. This renewed confidence empowered me to pursue new opportunities.
I recognised it was time to move beyond complacency. I had to let go of the belief that I was being overlooked, undervalued, or unworthy. Instead, I chose to embrace growth and with my renewed confidence, I was able to map out a clear plan for my career transition.
The Rewards
As a Regional Organiser, my role involves campaigning, negotiating, and consulting at a strategic level for Trade Union members. Securing positive outcomes for Trade Union members gives me a great fulfilment.
The Stellar programme didn’t just equip me with knowledge and insights; it gave me the confidence and courage to realise my full potential.
