"When I started my career, I viewed networking as an activity CEOs engaged in to promote their organisations. As a result, I did not engage in any form of networking.
However, by reading books and observing how other people engaged in networking, I started to shift my perspective and decided to explore this further.
Initially, I found the process tedious and often felt embarrassed. Gradually, I started to appreciate the value of networking and decided to change my approach.
Instead of forcing connections, I learned to build genuine relationships first and allowed the relationship space to grow. I realised that networking with like-minded people, keeping an open agenda, and sharing ideas can contribute to a smooth and rewarding networking experience.
This new approach has been transformative. I have expanded my network and this has helped me to collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds. For instance, I have had opportunities to deliver keynote speeches in Mexico and virtual workshops on career planning. These sessions brought together diverse perspectives and I found them inspirational. The success of these collaborative activities coupled with the offer of new opportunities solidified my belief in the power of networking.
Today, I enjoy being part of different networks and I can confidently say my "network is my net worth." I have an amazing and supportive network which has opened up new opportunities for me.
If you are hesitant about networking, I can relate to this. Nevertheless, I encourage you to take the first step, trust the process, and watch the magic unfold. What action can you take today?
